Test to early?

Hello, I've been trying to conceive on and off recently. Since my last period I never put on my contraceptive patch (as I didn't have any) and of course had intercourse. When I received my patches I put one on 12 days after my period. A week after my partner took it off meaning I should have come on 4 days after which would have been Saturday. I took a test today which came back negative as I've not been eating as much, getting stomach pains and feeling really bloated after eating. Opinions on whether I may have tested too early?
