Hwy delivery!

c

I posted this in birth stories but I figured my fellow Feb mammas might get a kick from hearing the full story as well!

My second baby, my precious baby girl was born last October. I am pregnant again now and plan on having things a little better planned to avoid another hwy delivery!

With my first I had to be induced after having my water break with no contractions. So when contractions did start with my second I didn't really know what was going on.

I had been outside with my husband and son and felt just fine. Came inside to feed him some lunch and then around 230 I started to 'get a stomach ache'. I thought I had eaten something bad because with the cramps I was having to go to the bathroom. I put baby in his saucer and put on some cartoons so I could deal with my tummy problems in the bathroom. After a little while I started to notice a pattern to the aches. So I took out all my midwife paperwork and read it.. 'call the pager when contractions are 5 minutes apart'... ok time to start timing. 2 and a half minutes apart. I thought that couldn't be right. It must just be a stomach ache. Finally after laboring for about an hour I called my husband to come inside (we live on a farm so he was out of yelling distance). He looked at me and told me to call midwife. I said no no its just a stomach ache. So he called me midwife and told her I was in labour. She got me on the phone and told me to pack up and start heading to town now. We live about an hour away from the city. So by the time we finally got everything ready. Animals secured etc it was around 400. Got baby in his car seat and I laid on the backseat. Contractions were getting stronger and faster. I don't know how fast he was driving but it felt fast and I could hear his four ways on and consistent honking. Haha. One thing to say about laboring med free is that those little breaks you get in between are amazing. Husband was on the phone with family and midwife on and off. And kept asking if I was ok when I would go silent during my breaks. Midwife (on speaker phone) kept telling me not to push. I said I was trying not to. The plan originally was to go to the birth center, about an hour and a half away but between contractions I told him that was NOT happening. So the plan switched to his parents house. About 50 mins from our house. In my head I kept telling myself I had to make it to the house and get upstairs to the bathtub. That was my goal... just get to the bath tub. But then my water broke. Still about 10 minutes from their house and 20 mins from a hospital. It was time. He pulled over on the overpass (we were so close!) He helped me get my pants off and said she was crowning. Time to finish pushing. Next contraction pushed her head out. Next contraction pushed her out. My baby girl was here and perfect, and my husband delivered her. Apparently he had sped past an officer on the way up the overpass and somewhere in the comotion he had pulled up and husband signaled to him what was going on. Soon after baby was out there were officers, ambulances, my midwife and in-laws all on the overpass that had been shut down. Ambulance transfered us to the hospital just for reassurance but everything was perfect. Baby was born at 519 after just under three hours of labour. And we were on our way home by 9 pm that night.

I wouldn't change a thing for my little hwy delivery. But I think I will try and plan a little better this time so we don't have to clean the back seat of our truck again!!
