When did your cycles return after giving birth?

I can't even get my birth control until I have a cycle and hoping I'm not pregnant again!

Why can't you have birth control before then? I ask because some women don't get their periods for a few months if they breast feed, but can certainly ovulate at some point during that time frame and can get pregnant.  My dr advised me to go ahead and start birth control or use another method before my period starts up again.
