When do you start producing breast milk?

I'm 33 weeks and hoping to breast feed, but I'm worried I won't produce enough breast milk. I hadn't noticed any production yet, except for a couple of clear drops a few weeks ago. No one in my family has really breast fed l, so I kinda don't know what to expect, but I feel like I should have noticed some production at this point.

I guess I heard these stories about women lactating when they would hear a baby cry and assumed it happened during pregnancy as well. Like I said no one else in my family has breast fed so I feel like I'm flying kinda blind lol.

Colostrum normally starts producing after you give birth, some ladies start lactating sooner than others.

You usually don't produce actual milk for a week after birth. It's colostrum until then which is super important for baby to have in the first few days.

When I had my son (on second pregnancy now) I took me 3 days after he was born to produce breast milk. I was so depressed that he couldn't feed from me for the first days of his life but I definitely recommend bringing a pump to the labor and delivery with you to help the milk come quick. Hopefully you don't have that problem but yes milk will come out when baby cries.

Several days after baby is born. I would recommend going to a la Leche league meeting a month before your due date so you can have a better idea of how it all works, and also Google Stanford manual expression and watch the video.

Don't worry if you don't start producing right away. Some women don't produce for up to three days pp. which is fine bc baby doesn't have to have food for three days.

Try to ensure that no one feeds your baby from a bottle--it's easier and less work for the baby to suck from a bottle than from the boob. Babies are smart, they don't want to work any harder than they have to so they can reject the boob in preference to the bottle. (I have heard this over and over again from moms about how the nurses gave the bottle instead of waking the mom for BF)

It's recommended that you don't introduce a bottle or pacifier until 3-4 weeks.

If you have ANY issues with latching properly, or any questions, request the breastfeeding consultant. Most hospitals have one, as do most health departments.

After you have your baby just nurse on demand, your milk will come in. The baby's belly is tiny at birth, I think the size of an almond, and colostrum is enough. My milk came in on the third day, and boy did I know it! Good luck!

Most women don't produce prior to birth.... usually the first couple days after birth from what I keep reading and hearing..

I'm on my third and hoping to BF this time since it failed miserably for me with my first two. But I was also pushed into formula when I shouldn't have been, because the nurses didn't want to take the time to help me and my mom felt the boys were not getting enough
