Binkies???

So my husband and I keep debating about giving our son a Binkie. I read you should wait 4 weeks but he used one with his daughter years ago and doesn't see anything wrong with it and our son keeps wanting to suck things. What are other moms doing??!

If you're planning on breastfeeding I'd wait until that was established. I gave in and gave my daughter one the day she was born while I was in recovery because I was totally out of it from all the meds I was given during my c-section abd she wouldnt latch and became extremely fussy. Now she won't latch without a nipple shield.

I love pacifiers, and they're much easier to break from than thumb sucking.

This is my 4th baby, I have nursed all of them and have given them binkies in the hospital. All had a great latch, no confusion! Just my experience!

Also, each of them stopped taking a binkie once they began cutting teeth! They didn't want it because mouth was sore and I never introduced it again and they were fine. No 2 year Olds with binkies at our house. My brother in laws son is pushing 3 and has one!

Depends on the baby. For my first and now my second, I have them a binky the first day and never had any issues.

Granted, my second is only two days old but no issues so far between breast/binky.

We aren't using one until he breastfeeds like a champ. For now, if he wants to suck, we stick a clean pinky in his mouth and it works, but most of the time when he wants to suck, he's actually hungry or wants comfort so I offer the breast first and that usually works.

With my now 12 year old she had one from day one and we threw them away on her first birthday. Never had a problem with her wanting it or looking for it. This time (our son was born June 3rd and is 2 weeks old now) we were also told to wait a month since I was going to breastfeed to avoid nipple confusion. Well my son haaaaaaates diaper changes and baths and screams his head off and we have nothing to calm him. I tried introducing it (4 different kind) and he will not take it...he makes a yucky face and spits it out. It winerys me a little bit because there have been studies that have shown that pacifiers reduce SIDS so we definitely planned on letting him suck on one for the first year. Maybe your baby just doesn't like the nipple on the pacifier you're trying to introduce? My mom said I only liked the nipples on the bottles so she just stiffed the nipple with cotton and I was satisfied with that :)

I think it completely depends on your baby. My little one took a pacifier when he was 3 days old and didn't have a problem breastfeeding. He also had a good latch right away. I'd say if you are having any troubles with breastfeeding to wait until that is established first.
