Pregnancy test

I don't know when I should take a pregnancy test and how long it should take for any real results to show. Some people tell me 6 days and others say 14 days. I am planning this I'm just really curious when I should take it and I do have a doctors appointment next week so I do have a plan. I just would like to know sooner.
