Should I buy formula before baby comes?

I'm a FTM, I'm hoping to breastfeed only for the first 6-9 months but I know that a lot of women have to supplement with formula.

Should I buy formula/bottles before the baby comes? Or just wait to see if I actually need it?

I'm a ftm, but I think this is where samples come in handy! You get them sometimes from the hospital or from starting a registry. I figured I'd keep them in case of an emergency, and then I'd also get to try which works best. Just an idea.

Don't sabotage yourself before baby is even born. If you want to exclusively breastfeed don't buy formula and don't give baby formula. It will mess with your supply. If you're having issues after birth it's very easy to buy formula if you really need it.

I plan to try to exclusively breastfeed and won't buy formula unless we get to the point that we need it - there are 24 hour supermarkets nearby so if things are desperate we can go buy some, but I think having it in the house ready to go will make it too easy to give up on breastfeeding and I really want to give it my best shot.

I would definitely wait. I BF my first and i did do eventually start supplementing with formula because I honestly hated pumping and wasn't producing enough to send to daycare. But I hate that I did that. This baby I plan to exclusively BF. I agree that if its there then you will be more tempted to give up on BF and give in to formula-which is fine, but if you are wanting to BF then just do your best and allow the chance to try it out. Baby will pretty much know exactly how and what to do, so you don't have much to worry about. Also, you won't know what formula to get. Baby could have allergies or sensitivities. I could only use Gerber Good Start Gentle on mine. But other babies may need soy. You won't know until baby is here. I definitely recommend trying breastfeeding first and if you don't like it or it just doesn't work out for whatever reason then you can begin searching for the right formula. Hope this helps! I've exclusively breastfed 4 of my 5 children and will be exclusively breastfeeding this baby too. I would say that if you really want to breastfed I would wait because it's more work to breastfeed and if the formula is on hand you might give in and give it instead of trying to just breastfeed. Just my opinion, I did half and half with my 2nd baby cause I thought it would give me a break but he stop BF by 6 months and I regret it but only cause I would have liked to continue BF him longer.

If you breastfeed on demand and correctly, there will be no reason to supplement at all. NOW, if there is a rare problem that you are unable to produce milk, the hospital will have formula and then you can have someone go buy some later if needed. It's expensive, no reason to buy now.

No because you don't know what type of formula your baby will take at the hospital or if he has a sensitive stomach that requires special formula. I personally would not do it

They will give you bottles from the hospital...wait and see what works best for your baby. I stuck with what they gave me from the hospital.

I would buy bottles but not a heap of formula (maybe just one) in case baby is allergic or something you don't want to waste your money on a heap that you end up throwing out

I would wait because you don't know what kind of formula your baby would like. I would talk to your pediatrician and see if they recommend a certain kind :)
