Getting a puppy

I've always wanted a dog and children. My husband and I are stable and have the money and space for a pet but we are unsure if it's a bad idea to get a puppy while trying to conceive.
My parents want a pet as well. However, we live in Canada and they go to Florida for 2 months every winter. So they have decided not to get a dog but are really excited about the prospect of pet sitting for us. So, I know the dog would have company during the day. I'm just wondering is it okay to have a young dog and a baby?
I would never want to be the type of people who get rid of a pet once they have a baby. I know there are exceptional circumstances but I've known a few people who have seemed to use a pet just as a temporary baby substitute.
Any thoughts on the timing of getting a pet when trying to conceive? Any personal experiences where this worked well or didn't?

We got married in December and immediately got a puppy. 3 months later we got a second one and we've been trying to conceive this whole time. Honestly I think it's almost better to get one now, that way it will be house trained by the time a baby comes and you won't have to worry about it. Our first dog took about 9 weeks to get potty trained and the second only took 3 weeks. Everyday they get better and better behaved so I know we'll be fine to add an addition to our little family 😉My brother tried a puppy RIGHT after they had their third baby and the dog only lasted 3 days because his wife got so overwhelmed. But right now I don't have any kids (though I want them!) and could focus on training the puppies so I'll have less to worry about when a baby comes. It is important to socialize them with young children though because you'll have an infant in the house. Taking them for walks around playgrounds can help because you're bound to have kids come up and pet the puppy. I also found having two young creatures in the house a great test of my patience ... Being woken up all night, cleaning up poop, pee, and vomit constantly (inside the house and out). I nearly went crazy the first week we had both! But I'm glad I've had the experience and feel much more confident that I'm better prepared to handle the greater responsibility of a child. Also, I'm planning on playing baby cries while I'm pregnant to get them used to the noise. I've read the best way is to Play the cries while the dog is eating or something else they enjoy so they begin to associate it with positive experiences. If you keep up with it they shouldn't be too shocked once a real baby comes home :) the last thing you want is a dog barking when a baby is crying. That's sure to drive you insane! and jealousy can be an issue too, I haven't read up on ways to prevent that yet, but I suggest you do, just to be prepared!

Whenever I would hear a baby cry when I was pregnant and especially while nursing, I would begin to lactate so be prepared to have your bra milk pads in while you play crying baby sounds for your pups! Lol

I dont see why not. Most women do it. Mind you, if you conceive this cycle, and get a pet, there is a 9 month gap between the pet and the newborn

By the time you have a baby, the dog should be housebroken and crate trained. HOWEVER. Newborns are exhausting. As a mother, you barely have time to leave the couch for at least 3 months because you're nursing. A hyper dog will not be welcome. I got a puppy when my son was almost 2 and I regretted it for well over a year. Puppies are so challenging, but if you can work to train it, then have fun. The problem is, you won't know how the dog will feel about kids until he meets one. So unless you have a kid around your house all the time, you'll run a risk.

If you are trying to conceive then I'd wait till after the baby is born. Getting a puppy and then that puppy having to get used to not having all the attention is going to strain him/her. My SO and I had a dog but she is always with us and we spoil her rotten (she is still well trained) and when we found out we were expecting we decided to get another puppy for her. We felt if she got used to having another person around who would get some attention as well she'd be better with the baby.

As I lay in bed with my cat, hubby, 1 year old dog, and 5 month old puppy I am voting yes to your puppy. Lol. They can be a pain in the hurt some days, but once you get one he/will fit right in and when the time comes probably be babies best friend. The fact that you've thought about it this thoroughly means you're going to be great fur parents. :)
