Cultural Appropriation
Hello everyone! Now...I just read something about the rapper Tyga (who really cares) using a white girl in Bantu Knots in his new music video centered around Jamaica. A lot of people are upset saying he could have used a woman from Jamaica in the video (true) instead of a touristy looking white chick.
I was just wondering what cultural appropriation actually means. How do people of color/ minority cultures believe that white people should act?
For example: I honestly have worn the Bantu style knots around my house before not knowing that they originiated in Africa, I just noticed that twisting my hair like that makes it curly (big ups to the people who realized this) am I being culturally offensive?
But, I also wouldn't wear a sari or bindi around in public to look cool, and I don't buy Navajo, Aztec, or "Native" print things because they're a group of people...not a pattern.
My personal feeling is that I never try to harm anyone or to be culturally insensitive, I'm not an Internet celebrity of any kind so I don't make money off of my fashions or anything. I also would never say that someone is ugly based on their skin color.
What do I have to be careful about?
Please help I'm genuinely confused and concerned. I think this is a big issue we should be addressing as young women.
