It's assimilation not appropriation. Unfortunately she believes a light skin complexion would make her look more attractive. Blacks and many other POC believe that anything closest to whiteness is better because of what society and the media has taught us. Statistically people of a lighter skin tone in ethnic communities are treated less poorly and have better opportunities than those of a darker skin tone. I'm too tired to explain.

So I know Wikipedia isn't the most reliable source of info. However, it generally gets he job done when you need basic info fast. "Cultural appropriation is adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture..."

Unless she's appropriating a cultural behavior of bleaching skin (which I haven't heard of, but who knows)... I wouldn't call it cultural appropriation.

Having said that, I'm sure sociologists or anthropologists would have some term that they'd apply to the behavior. I just don't know what it is.
