1st trimester gender test?

Anyone have this done? Is it part of a genetic testing or just an elective test you have to pay for?

It's both.  If you meet certain criteria,  your doctor will order a test that will also be able to determine the sex.  If you don't meet that Criteria,  it is a test you may be able to elect to have if you pay for it,  but from what u understand its roughly $900-1000 depending on your location and whether your insurance will cover the test in medically unnecessary circumstances.

Well the nurse said that is the same one, and that most insurances usually cover it, with normal deductible costs. I'm in Michigan, USA.

The test you are referring to is called "non-invasive prenatal testing" (brand names are Materna21 and Panorama). The test is used to find chromosomal abnormalities, such as downs syndrome. The reason it finds gender is because some abnormalities, like Turner syndrome, are connected to the sex chromosomes.
In Ontario the yeast is covered for women over 40 or women who have had a previous pregnancy with issues. It may also be covered if problems are detected at your 12 week ultrasound.
In Canada the test costs $900 of you want to pay for it but is covered by ohip for the women in the above categories. 
It's just a maternal blood test which finds babies cells in your blood. It's not a big deal so if you want pay for it to find out the gender early then go for it. The test can be done at 9 weeks at the earliest.

My insurance wouldn't cover it with my first pregnancy unless they found an issue. It would have been $1500. We decided against it. With my second we just didn't bother even thinking about it. Now my friend was over 35 and they deemed her high risk so it was covered by insurance
