Advice!!

I've been with my boyfriend for over 2 and a half years now, and he's always talked about joining the military. We just graduated and we planned on staying together, but just the other day he said he wanted to be just friends when he goes into the military. He thinks that a relationship will be difficult with less communication while he's away. Has anyone been in this situation before or have any advice for me?
