What is spotting and why does it happen?

Is it related to your period or is it mostly used to talk about random bleeding for some other reason? Sorry if this sounds dumb; I'm just kind of confused with hearing people talk about it and then its place in the logging system on here. Do you log spotting along with your flow when you're on your period or just your flow?
