Baby name issues with family?

I am having a sweet baby girl this thanksgiving and my husband and I decided we were going to name her JaNell Marie after our mothers middle names... I had mentioned that I didn't want her called Nellie and now my father in law and the rest of my husbands family have started calling her Nellie and the worst is they are even calling her "Smelly Nellie"... If her own family is going to tease her and make fun of her before she is even born should I just change her name? If her family is calling her that I can't imagine what the mean kids at school will come up with..

Am I overreacting?

Oh poor baby girl. If family is making up hurtful names now, I don't think changing her name is going to help. Maybe you and your husband could sit down with daddy dearest and discuss how much this will hurt you and your daughter? The mean behind what you chosen is beautiful and should be respected. I don't even know what I'd do, except to tell them off (I get pretty angry during pregnancy) and that they will never get to meet her (pretty much empty threats. I'm not very rational either) How does your husband react? If he's bothered, then definitely say something (more like have him say something) if he isn't, then you may need to explain your fear to him.

We are not announcing our baby's name until he's born for this reason! Bottom line is, it's YOUR baby and you can name them whatever you want!

Try not to be so serious they are family and they are having fun with it. Nellie is pretty sounding. They are allowed to have fun with the name. Try to relax and let it be.

We aren't telling people our name choices so we don't have to hear people's opinions. That said, my daughter is Isabella and we call her Smella Bella... My moms nickname for her is weasel, I don't even know why but she's 14 and it's stuck. Nicknames, when they're silly and said in a loving way, don't bother me at all. All of my kids have silly cutesy nicknames and none of them are bothered. I've taught them to speak up if they don't like a name once they're old enough. My oldest is Sophia and hates "Sophie" and tells people. Isabella always hates "Izzy " and will say something.

Ughhhh people just don't think!! Like of course if you say you don't like the nickname Nellie they shouldn't be saying that omg I would just go ahead and use your pissed prego lady card and tell them where they can shove it...seriously they obviously don't care about your feelings and our going through some sad grandparents jealousy they deserve to be told their place. We have 2 kids already so I've had something like this happen with ours last pregnancy and this time im not telling anyone what the name is until he's here. Don't stress too much, if you love the name please keep it don't let anyone ruin your moment and this will all pass in time and be forgotten.

Honestly, I wouldn't change it. You like the name. Little kids are going to be jerks regardless. They'll find a nickname for anything. Besides. I think Nellie is cute!
We're naming our son Cillian (kill-ee-an) and my brother keeps calling him ceiling fan 😑

Even better. My aunt and her 17 year old daughter told the rest of my family we were naming him "Gaylord or some dumb shit like that". Obviously, I lost my shit on them and their phone numbers have been blocked. 🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪🔪

Moral of the story. Adults and kids are mean. But at least a kids have an excuse. Keep her name. Ignore the dumb comments.
