Future plans...

I was talking to my SO about where we wanted to be in 5+ years. We both want to go back to college and finish our degrees. We see each other still together. We've been dating for over a year now and have been through a lot together. However, he wants to move to a different state where neither of our family live. Most of my family already lives in another state but my mother and I are in the same state. I couldn't imagine being farther away from family. Especially if we end up engaged, married, and have a family one day. He does plan on moving there for sure but not know exactly when. Could this be a make or break situation? When I try to bring it up changes the subject. I'm sort of ranting but would like to know others opinions and similar experiences.
