Iud strings

I got my iud in July 8th and it was the best decision ever. Cramped for a week, spotting ever since and now I'm not even enough a wear a panty liner. My doctor said to check the stings often but didn't tell me too much after since I was in pain I wanted to get out and lay down with a heating pad. So how often do I check them ? What's the best time to check them? I heard after your period. Thank you I just didn't get the chance to ask these questions ! I looked up but everywhere is different.
