Epidural question

 How long should I wait to get the epidural? I know people get it at 5 cm, but I heard it wears off and numbing will not  make it to were your pushing and you feel the ring of fire. I want to time it just right so I can get it and not feel anything for rest of my birthing, if means to deal with the pain a little longer.
