Why do people fight so much over religion?

I read through the controversy topic posts and seriously like 80% of all of them either are about religion or end up in some kind of religion debate.. Why do people care so much? Lol I'm just wondering!! Please don't freak out at me for asking 😬

Religion is so weird to me. All these holy books were written hundreds of years ago and people today think it's relevant to life today. Just my opinion.

Becaus people like to use their religion as a reason to oppress other people.

In my opinion, religion is personal. People should take what their religious book tell them and apply to themselves/family only and let other people love their lives how they choose. But a lot of people seem to have a big problem doing that.

The biggest point of tension from
my perspective, is the push to enact laws and regulations for all Americans based on the religious beliefs of some. You see this in the abortion debate, marriage debate, women's health debate, etc.  
An additional point of friction comes from the claims that Christians are persecuted and oppressed because others don't want their religious beliefs to be forced into the rest of society. 
 
I think it's crass to make fun of their beliefs. I think it's appropriate and deserved to call out the attempts at claiming persecution and attempts to impose religion on others.

Really there shouldn't be, as someone who is religious I think we need to be strong. When we are speaking on what we believe just as anyone else speak on what they believe, they should feel strong in their beliefs and not angry.. 
You don't have to accept how someone is or what they believe but don't be naive thinking everyone thinks the same as you. 
Everyone is clearly different. You don't believe oh that's cool, moving on. 
But the reason people argue is because those who do believe try to shove things down the throat of those who don't believe.  And vice versa. Those who don't believe get all bitter when someone believes. When really it shouldn't matter

I'll fight someone making fun of another person religion. I'll also fight someone over making fun of someone's lack of religion.  Keep your beliefs to yourself. Don't be an asshole.

I think because religion is a huge part of many peoples' lives. It's a big fat sensitive topic that tends to spark a lot of heat. Also, just from some of the arguments about religion on posts not about religion, it's easy to use religion to either promote/deplete a point.

When I look at religion, it just seems like the foot of all evil sometimes. No offense.

All the crazy people I've met in my life, use the excuse GOD, that includes my own mom whom I can barely have s conversation with without talking about God, praying or reading scriptures!
