Early Shower/Reveal?

My husband and I have decided that during this pregnancy we are going to have a baby shower quite a bit earlier than most at about 20 weeks gestation. We have decided to have our baby shower AND gender reveal the same day. Our thoughts behind this are we already have one child so we aren't expecting this shower to be as fruitful as the first one was. Also, by having the reveal and shower together we are doing less party planning and budgeting for TWO parties PLUS budgeting to buy things that others haven't came forward to purchase for us. 
I've told a few friends about this idea of ours and have been told that it's a bit ridiculous because we aren't giving people the opportunity to purchase gender specific items for our new addition. In my opinion that provides my husband and I the opportunity to purchase what we feel like the baby will actually wear and use. 
Are we insane or financially conscious...?
