Membrane Strip

Any helpful tips on what goes on with a membrane strip? My Dr didn't even mention it with my first pregnancy that went 10 days late, and last week she mentioned it. I'll be 3 days over tomorrow. Does it hurt? What do they exactly do? Can I expect to be in the hospital soon after?
