I've been long distance for almost two years now and it's been great. :) we will finally permanently be together in January and all of this will have been worth it.

Yes I've been in a long distance relationship for 2 years, it works if you're really commited but our relationship wasn't distant until 2 months in but we'd been close long before we dated so it wasn't difficult. It also depends on how social you guys are me and my boyfriend are already loners/introverts but if you guys are constantly hanging out with friends or going to parties and socializing you'll be more likely to connect with another person because it almost feels like your SO is gone. Long distance is a lot of work espiecally if you're a very social person or you're SO is.
