water broke

So my water broke and Doctor told me to wait for contractions. We are approaching the 12 he mark and I really don't want to start pitocin. This is my third pregnancy and first time with my water breaking. Is there anyone out there who has had this happen? How long did it take for contractions to start? Any advice to get them going on my own?
