Do you think an engagement is official without a ring?

I saw another post about this. A woman asked her boyfriend to marry him, he said yes, now engaged but I didn't see anything about a ring. I read other stories like this as well. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other, just would like to see what people think counts as "official" :)

No object means commitment to me. Even marriage, it's the two people who make the commitment not the rings.

It's still an engagement whether there's a ring or not. The fact that your significant other wants to marry you and is taking that next step, with or without a ring, should be what matters. A ring is just an object. It doesn't necessarily mean a thing about how someone feels about you. Yes, it was given to you as an engagement ring, but it's the emotions in the relationship that make the difference. Not a ring

In my husbands culture there isn't really an engagement ring, there is a dowry instead which is presented on the day of marriage, a dowry could be anything really, mainly it is a large sum of money that his family would pay my father to have me... so I won't sugar coat it, he would literally buy me of my father and negotiate a reasonable price for me. But we didn't do that instead he gave me two gold and diamond rings as I am from a much different culture and didn't feel comfortable with him paying my father to marry me

If my boyfriend proposed without a ring, we would still be engaged, its not the fact of the material possession that makes it official, its the fact that he wants to marry me. That's all that matters.

Not all countries and cultures do rings. Norwegians don't in general but my fiancé knew that as an American it was something I would enjoy. I also know plenty of German couples who didn't have rings, or they bought wedding bands and wore them on different hands than when they were married

This is a great question.  After reading other responses I would have to say that it depends on the culture.  If the engagement was here in the U.S. and there was no ring, it would also depend on the time period between the engagement and wedding. If a couple were engaged for five years, no ring and no plans I wouldn't consider it a real engagement tbh.
