Is it ok to tell people what they can or can't give your kids for Christmas?

Today is my 3 year olds birthday. After taking his birthday loot to his playroom to put away my stomach is unsettled. He is sweet and really good at sharing but he has too much. Way too much. We always get him something small but his grandparents on both sides send bigger gifts. For Christmas we'd really like to ask them to only buy books and clothes. I feel so rude and entitled telling them what to get him. What do you guys think?
