gray tabs?

It's not happening right now, but sometimes my tabs of the different groups I follow will be gray. Is this normal? I've just been noticing it more lately and I never knew why they did it. It usually corrects itself whenever I click on a post (like it did just a minute ago). Is this an occurring problem for anyone else?
