house question --

Does this look dumb? Trying to baby proof without spending any extra right now or racking my brain for ideas. I have a almost four year old and a new baby next month and were moving into  a new place with fireplace that has the brick step clearly and had this rug because current house is hardwood floors this new one isn't... Does this look absolutely retarded? Lol the stairs were easy Cus baby gates hha this not so much
