Birth Control HELP!!

Okay so my mom has decided to put me on birth control against my will. I'm not sure what would be best for me though. I've hears horror stories of severe acne, weight gain, continuous periods, and all sorts of other scary things. I want as little side effects as possible while still having total protection. Any help would be awesome. My appointment is Friday the 14th of August so comments before then would be appreciated. Thanks ladies.
