What if I can't breastfeed!

I'm afraid I won't be able to Breastfeed, honestly I  talk to my sister about it she said she wasn't able at all because when she had her baby her boobs were to sore and she just couldn't?

Mine were very sore too. Your body just has to 'break in' so to speak. It doesn't mean you can't,  it's just uncomfortable in the beginning for some.  The first month was hard and then it got better. I almost gave up with my first, I cried a few times,  but I ended up breastfeeding him until 14 months and his younger brother until 16 months.

If you can survive the first 3 weeks, you will be in the clear. It's not easy but if you have your nurses and lactation consultants help you latch baby until you get it down perfect it'll make a huge difference. A bad latch is painful but even a good latch isn't comfortable until your nipples have had time to toughen up. It's all about will power so just tell yourself every feeding that this is for your precious baby and it's what is best. Plus let me just say, the ability to whip out a boob and feed your baby is soooo much easier and more convenient than putting together a bottle! Lol

The first two weeks are the hardest. If you can't, or won't, formula is there. There's no shame in feeding your kid formula.

That's her and her experience.  Yours might be different. Don't be scared because of what your sisters experience.  Once baby gets here, you try to BF if you want to, and see what happens. I definitely want to BF but I am not going to drive myself crazy thinking about what if. If I can't then formula it is. The kid's gotta eat regardless.

In my breastfeed class the LC spoke that it is very rare that a woman not be able to breastfeed (except for her own reasons). Women in other countries all breastfeed and in order to get formula they have to have a prescription.

Your boobs are going to be sore. That's part of it.

Everything I've read says to just try and try again. There are plenty of books that discuss how to deal with issues and trouble. I'm personally going to get some formula to have on hand just in case it doesn't work.

I plan to breastfeed and my mom told me to just grit my teeth through the first week or two until your nipples get used to it. It's like taking up running, you have to get a couple of blisters before you build a callous! I hope you give yourself a chance to try it if you're wanting to!
