6 weeks postpartum bleeding

My bleeding stopped around 4-5 weeks postpartum but the past few days I've had bright red bleeding return. It's not heavy enough to soak through a pad an hour which I know they say to look out for, but it does seem rather heavy. Definitely not just spotting. No cramps or pain at all so it doesn't seem like a period. I'm also EBF. I did call my doctor and left a message, waiting for a call back now but just curious if this happened to anyone else and what it ended it being.
