What is the best birth control?

So I have never been on birth control before but I've been thinking a lot about it and wanted to know if there is any good bc that doesn't have a lot of side affects and which ones to stay away from. When I was younger I had really bad irregular periods and now it's not bad at all, my normal cycle is about 4 days with light/medium bleeding and I really don't want to mess that up by being on bc. Any advice? Thanks.
