to shave or not to shave

Growing up I wasn'ttaught to shave my volva until i was 16 and all the girls did it cuz they said thats what boys liked. I wasn't sexuaally active at the time so I didn't care. Then I turned 18 and got active but was so paranoid that my partner would find me gross because I didn't shave. So I tried it, I hated it and it turned out he didn't care. However now im with someone else and i feel so selfconscious and am  not sure how  to get over it. Help?
