Are crib bumpers safe? Im debating on buying one or not.

No, they increase the chance of suffocation until they have good head control and can roll themselves back over. Better safe than sorry. And if you absolutely have  to have one, go with mesh.

I wouldn't use one for a young infant but I might use one with a child 8 months or older.

I extensively and I mean extensively researched this with my first child four years ago. I thoroughly researched every bumper related injury or death for the 10 years prior. I found very very little evidence of any that bumpers are in any way dangerous. The amount claimed is insanely low. Like better chance of getting hit by lightning low and of those claimed 90% of them were illegitimate to blame the bumper itself and had other reasons like improperly fitting mattress where baby got wedged between mattress and crib and things like that. Of the ones that were more legitimate it was blatant negligence. Obviously bumpers should be properly secured and installed. And there are even regulations on the length of the ties now so it's mostly a moot point anyway.

So my point is from my perspective it is my honest and educated opinion that if you use a bumper as intended making sure it's always secure it poses no risk to baby. If you have fear though bumpers aren't necessary so feel free not to use lol.

But in the UK you can buy breathable cot bumpers which r great and a lot of my friends use them
