I would just tell them upfront that your relationship with them isn't working for you and that you need to consider what's best for you and your needs

I was in the same situation. She texted me the day of my wedding saying she wouldn't make it cause she had a family event to go to. That's not a best friend. She tried to say sorry, and she didn't even congratulate me. I ignored the text haven't heard from her since. That was the last straw with her. Looking back, she would always bring me down in high school, she was never happy for me, I was never a first choice of friend when it came to hang out, and her stories were always more important than mine. I'm glad im not her friend anymore. I really don't need that negativity and toxicity in my life. 
I have to be around her again when my best friend gets married (I'm MOH she's a bridesmaid) . Not looking forward to it. 
If i were in your shoes I would just say it upfront. I kind of regret not talking to this girl and tell her how much she was hurting our relationship. Just for closure reasons. Tell them.
