What does a membrane sweep do?! And how far along are you when you get it?

Answer

It's done in late pregnancy as a form of induction. It doesn't work for everyone though. But it's done by your midwife or doctor. They "sweep" a finger around your cervix to try to separate the membranes around your baby from your cervix. It releases a hormone called prostaglandins that can help kickstart labor.
