too young for a promise ring?

My boyfriend and I have been together for over a year now and I know this sounds cliche but I really do think we will be together forever. He's in college and I am a senior, last week he gave me a beautiful promise ring with our date on it. I wear it everywhere. One of my teachers saw it and said I'm too young for a promise ring. Is this true?
