IUD Insertion
Ladies. I'm here to offer some pro tips for getting an IUD. I don't know if I actually want to use the word "pro" because I've only had it done once and that was all of 8 hours ago, but whatever. I'm going to call myself a pro.
1. Take a whole bunch of ibuprofen beforehand. I took prescription strength that I had leftover (no one chastise me, I'm fine) and I know it helped a bunch. I started taking it the night before so it would fully get in my bloodstream.
2. If they give you the little tablet thing to put in your vag the night before, do it. Not sure if it helped because I have no comparison, but it may have. And it gave me a tiny bit of peace of mind, so that was worth the $1.48 that it cost.
3. Have them explain everything they're doing. This was super helpful for me.
4. Breathe when they're putting it in. (Not because they need you to, because you can't relax your cervix into opening. It doesn't work like that.) I forgot about that and almost passed out. Maybe you shouldn't have to be reminded to breathe? Oh well. I forgot. Consider this your reminder.
5. If they give you a stress ball, take it. The insertion hurts like a bitch for like 2 minutes - maybe less. They'll say it's "crampy," but I'd say it's way sharper than that. I've never had sex, so it may have been exceptionally painful for me in that sense.
6. Bring a pad. You won't be able to use tamps for a week and you'll prolly be bleeding a lot. The place looked like a crime scene when they were done with mine.
7. Take the day off work/school. Even if you feel fine right afterwards, like I did, you will very likely be super unproductive and will want to be at home curled up watching Friends and drinking coffee.
8. If you can't take the day off, bring a heating pad and start a dripline of caffeine.
