I started talking to my boss and hr department about it when I was about 14 weeks when we told everyone.  I wanted to plan and make sure I had everything done I needed to way before I go out so I don't have to stress about it

Check to see if your employer has a maternity policy - if they do it may include details of when you have to inform them of your pregnancy and tell them what leave you want. If they have a policy and you don't follow it that can affect your eligibility.  I had to inform my employer in writing no later than the start of the 25th week of my pregnancy - if I'd waited longer I could have lost thousands in pay. I also think it's fair to give your employer time to make cover and handover arrangements and that breeds goodwill which you may need later.
