what makes a relationship last?

In your personal opinion (or based on personal experience) what do you believe truly makes a relationship last long term?

Treating each other like you're still dating. Doing things to impress them, going on dates and still having as much sex as you were before the "I'm tired.. too busy.. kids" excuse.

I have been with the same man my whole life from 14 to 45 and I think what makes a relationship last is being friends first so even when it's not always lovy dovy you still have your friendship to fall back on . And knowing when to ignore stuff lol if I picked a fight over everything that bothers me I wouldn't still be here cuz there can be alot of stuff when you live with someone we have our space to retreat to if we need to be alone I have my bedroom and he has his garage  it is very important to be able to give someone space if they need it

Communication sand trust.  I've been with my bf for 6 months and we've both had bad past relationships which effects our trust issues but we always make sure we remind and continue to show  each other our loyalty. When we argued we used to just shut down and not talk to one another now we actually sit down and talk when someone's bothered or upset. It's all a work in progress

Trust and humor. If you can't find the funny in the horrible, you'll be doomed. If there exists no trust, there's no relationship.

You have to be able to talk. He doesn't know how to read minds, and neither do you. You can't give the silent treatment when you're upset and then wonder why nothing changes. And it doesn't always have to be long drawn out conversations (though sometimes that is necessary), it can be "hey, I need attention, can we plan to spend some time tonight?"

You also need to trust each other.You need to know that your man loves you, and he needs to know you love him, and that no one or nothing comes before your relationship with each other. That will help give you both confidence enough that you don't feel the need to control each other's lives or set million sensitive boundaries and rules, and prevent either of you from feeling trapped or smothered.

And that leads to respecting each other's individuality. He is human, he's a person. He has likes and dislikes, emotions, hobbies, best friends, family, and his own life. You are a human, who also has likes and dislikes, emotions, hobbies, friends, family, and your own life. Some of these things you will share together, and that will help bond and give you things to enjoy together to build your relationship up on. But some of these you will not share, and that's ok. Respect that. You may HATE something he absolutely loves, but let's be honest, he probably hates something you love, too. Don't try to keep each other from these things. You can enjoy time apart, doing your own thing. You're not objects to own, nor are you puppets pulling each other's strings. Let each other breath sometimes. It's healthy. 
And that, in my unprofessional opinion, is what a good relationship foundation needs in order to grow and last
