Angry at her boyfriend for his suspected infidelities, a 21-year-old Pennsylvania woman allegedly threatened Tuesday, in a series of irate texts, to kill the couple’s two small children — and then tried to make good on her promise.

Christian Clark has been charged with murder for the smothering death of her 17-month-old son and attempted murder for trying to kill her 2-year-old daughter, according to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE.

The complaint accuses Clark of hours of erratic behavior in which she threatened her young children and then killed one of them during a nearly constant stream of text messages to her boyfriend — berating and taunting him, before ultimately apologizing.

In one message Tuesday night, she allegedly wrote, “Im killing them” and included a laughing emoji with tears coming out of its eyes.

Police say the text messages continued an argument Clark and her boyfriend had had hours earlier. She allegedly texted him for more than two hours that night, warning him that his children’s lives were at risk.

She accused him of cheating on her, and her texts demanded he return to their home or, “Ima ruin both our lives.”

This is such a tragic story I can't seem to wrap my head around it.

Why do some women take it out on their kids to get back at the father?

Is this a case of mental illness or an evil individual?

Should women with mental illnesses continue to get help even after recovery of the illness?
