Have you ever had to make the decision to leave a great long term relationship that you knew would never go on the path you wanted it to go on?

How did you feel when the realization hit? How did you break it off? And how did you "get over it"?

Yep.. I've done it twice.. I knew that I couldn't happily wake up to them everyday for the rest of my life.. I didn't like worrying about if they were cheating or if they truly only had eyes for me.. And I wanted someone who had my back just like I had theirs.. Letting go was hard but necessary.

I broke off a relationship with someone that I loved dearly, wanted a family with, etc. It wasn't great towards the end. About 6 months before we had found out he was sick. He would be wheelchair bound by 30, could never have kids because he would pass the gene onto his kids and it would be 10x worse, and he could probably never work. Something happened within him. He started abusing drugs. Abusing me verbally and physically. He was going down a very dark path and trying to drag me down with him. I wanted what we had before, but I didn't know how to be there for him. I didn't know how to help him. I didn't know how to set him back on the right path. He just gave up and didn't see the point in living. I was only 16, had very serious mental issues, and couldn't take on a lot. I had to leave for my own safety and sanity. When I had to end it, we were not talking because I got mad. He was selling drugs. A week after, he texted me saying he loved me and it just went on from there. I told him how I felt, he said he'd change so I told him to take some time by himself and work on himself. I told him he needed to stop over taking his medication, smoke weed only when he needed it, stop smoking cigarettes, and quit partying all the time before I would take him back. He told me he would and that's where I left things. Long story short, my little brother is friends with his little brother, his friends would tell me what was going on, etc. The gist was, he wasn't working on anything. He only got worse. I would ask him and he'd always confirm. 
After the break up, I was so numb. I cried twice. I couldn't feel anything, I knew I was hurting but didn't wanna feel it. I ended up finding someone else, got bullied by my ex best friend because she said I was horrible and left him because he was sick and cheated on him. Everyone in my high school hated me because I was the girl who broke the heart of the sick boy. I never left him because he was sick. I never left him because we could
