Birth control patch questions! Please help.

Hi ladies! If any of you can help that would be awesome! So a week ago I switched birth control methods. I had the implanon for almost the 3 years but decided to take it out because my periods got awful I would spot all the time and I was tired of constantly being on my period. And that same day it came out I went on the Xulane birth control patch. And today I barely switched to the second patch. I know that on the 4th week it's a "patch free" week, my question is during that week I know I'm "supposed" to get my period. Me and my bf have unprotected period sex (sorry of that's tmi) am I still protected that week? And if not isn't it unsafe to have unprotected sex right before your "patch free week" cause I hear that sperm can live inside for 5 days. I do not use condoms and he cums inside. I'm just so lost please help thanks :)
