opinions on different birth control?

Ok, I'm not on birth control. I use the pull out method (yes, I know it's not effective.) however, I'm considering being put on birth control because my periods are awful. I'm talking a tampon over-soaked within 2 hours with a thick pad on. I need to go to a gyno about it. Anyway, any suggestions on good birth control that is easy on the periods & won't make me gain a bunch of weight? My husband leaves for the military in a few months & I don't want to be on my period before he leaves. 🙄 I know everyone is different, but what do you use & what do you like about it? Did you end up getting pregnant at all even though it's 99.9% more effective then pullout ? How are your periods? Another thing, my periods are horribly irregular too. Does it make your period regulate? Any suggestions or advice would be very appreciated. I'm looking to set an appointment with planned parenthood & see what they can help me with.

Definitely see your gyno soon, that heavy of bleeding could be caused by an underlying issue and you'll want that dealt with before anything else.
So here's a bit of the information I know about the different BC options from my own intensive research, but I'm not a medical professional so don't take my word as fact and you should definitely do your own research on medical sites too.
BC pill - There are two types, combination and mini pill, and many brands. Each can effect you differently. They work on a 3 week on, 1 week off system to help regulate bleeding. The combination pill works mainly by preventing ovulation, but can also work by thickening the cervical mucus to prevent the sperm from traveling and thins the uterine lining so the fertilized egg can't be implanted. You can take the pills continuously to stop the bleeding, but this can cause breakthrough bleeding during the first year.
The patch - works similarly to the combination pill and is also used 3 week on, 1 week off but for the patch you replace it weekly instead of taking it daily. Some people experience skin irritation on the area they put the patch so they suggest alternating which side it's placed on to prevent this. This can regulate bleeding or if taken continuously it can stop the bleeding completely.
NuvaRing - it's a ring you insert into your vagina once a month and can also be used on a 3 week on, 1 week off system. This also works the same way the combination pill. This can regulate bleeding or if taken continuously could stop bleeding completely.
Depo-provera - a shot given every 12 weeks that works the same way as the combination pill. It is the only hormonal BC with a possible link to weight gain with 1 in 4 gaining a significant amount of weight and 3 in 4 gaining a small amount of weight. It can also lower bone density, which may not return to normal after use, so it's suggested you take calcium supplements to combat this.

I was on the depo shot bleednfor lost 9 months straight. I don't recommend the shot. I'm almost done with my first combination pill and on the placebos. I think the spotting I just starting is my period on the pill. Got two white ones (placebo) left.

Flo is that normal for the pill first time users.
