Doctor checking cervix?

Why is it that the doctor doesn't really check the cervix unless medically necessary?? Some women dilate and not even know it.. isn't checking it the same as having sex anyways? I mean checking it and having sex both touches the cervix right?

Technically dilation doesn't mean anything. My doctor checks me every appointment now and I've been 3cm dilated for the past 3 weeks and I'm 40w6d and still no baby.

Dilation really means nothing unless you're contracting also and or your water broke. My friend was at a 3 for a month and still had to be induced. 
And no, sex and a check are different. It's the sperm and whatnot that the male leaves behind that's supossed to soften the cervix. A check is them just poking around to see if you're open any.

That's why I've refused mine the past 2 visits. There's no point in knowing because It means nothing. So you just sit there anxiously thinking every slight twinge of pain or every Naseua spell is a sign of labor. Which is most often not the case at all.

With my son, my doctor started checking at 36 weeks, and I stayed 2-3 cm dilated until I was induced due to my fluid levels almost a month later. Early dilation has absolutely no bearing on when you will go into labor.

You can dilate super slowly.  And you need contractions also... so it doesn't matter if you are dilated 1 or 2 cm.  That doesn't mean the baby is ready to come out.

Checking the cervix unnecessarily can be dangerous , risk of infection and possibly making your body do things that it shouldn't be doing at that time .

Mine doesn't check ever if you got into labor it's because your body is ready. Of course she won't let you go way past due but she gives me ultrasounds instead to make sure everything is ok.
