We plan on naming our son William, but are still deciding on what to call him. We've narrowed it down to two choices (I appreciate people's input about Will, Liam, etc, but these are the two we decided on). Which do you prefer?

I know a family that had a daughter. They named her Laura. From the time she was born until she went to kindergarten she was called Rachel. I'm not sure why. Rachel isn't even her middle name. When she went to school all of a sudden she had to be Laura. The child didn't even know her name. Wouldn't answer to it or anything. They had a long road with that one. Point of this is, Nicknames aren't always the best. I realize that people will call your child whatever they please. Like William, I like that name, but in school he will be call Will, Willey, Bill, Billy, Liam and a plethora of other names by class mates and other students. Personally, I like to stick with calling kids what they were named. So I would call him William. The more people hear you call him William, the more more they will do it.

Why give your child a name, then decide to have a side name for him too? Mine as well go by the side name as the first name.

here is a newsflash: people will call him whatever they like and the parents can't really influence this. this about the school friends, family friends.... you can hardly correct them all at the risk of sounding pretentious...

My brother is Wilkiam and he goes by Billy.. now more often Bill I guess as he ages.  He is the sweetest person I know. So for me I love Billy. He gets Big Bill alot because hes a biiig guy but noone could ask for a nicer person. So I am totally biased on the name Billy.

Love the name William. It's one of my top boy names. If I ever use it he'll probably have the nickname Will. Strong and classic

Billy sounds like a childs name and it would suck as an adult name. Always hated it. William is a wonderful name. I have two Williams in my class this year and both prefer to go by William.

I love the name William! It's so old yet modern but SUCH a strong name! Would never shorten it and would call him William till he's old enough to choose if he likes it or wants to be called by his middle name or another name....
