What does it mean for a cervix to be "open on the outside, and "closed on the inside"? Does this mean my body is starting the dialation process?

Answer

In a way. The cervix is kind of like a long tube. The inner part (the part facing your baby) is called the inner Os and the outer part (the part facing your vaginal opening is called the outer Os. As the cervix changes, the opening - or tube - gets shorter (this is called effacement) and wider (called dilation). Unfortunately the inner and outer Os sometimes will not dilate equally and frequently the outer will start changing first. This is a good sign bc it means change, but doesn't do anything for you ultimately since it's the inner Os that counts. Think of it as good tho since it means things are effacing! Hope this helps.
