With the current drug "epidemic" do you think that drug users and abusers should sent to prison ?

There's apparently a drug epidemic going on. In the past, crack addicts and weed users would be jailed, no questions asked and few to no options given. Think back to the crack era, and how weed is treated now. Do you think people should be imprisoned for their crimes or no?

If you actually wanted to combat drug problems you'd help drug addicts, not punish them.

There's drugs in prison, and without proper rehabilitation, drug addicts just go back to using after their sentencing is up.

Decriminalise drugs, dismantle the stigma against addicts and help addicts by sending them to rehab.

I went to prison because of drugs. I was cooking, using, and selling meth. I was arrested July 7, 2012. And honestly, prison was the best thing for me. I was not ready to go to rehab so I had to be forced away from my situation. I have been clean ever since. I may be the very small percentage of people that has a positive experience with prison and never went back or relapsed.
I went to a drug rehab when I was released and at that point I was a year sober and ready to heal and move forward. Yes prison and rehab were hard, as well as dealing with my re-entry court program. I had to pay off all my funds and court costs, go to weekly meetings with my case worker for drug tests, classes and find a job. I did it all and had a lot of help and support from my mom and step dad. 
So now I've been clean 4 1/2 years, I'm married living in a great neighborhood in a beautiful house with the sweetest dog. I worked extremely hard to get where I'm at. And it may be different for other people, but I am a success story and I am very proud of myself.
So I guess it depends on the person and if they want the help. Not all drug addicts need to go to prison to get better, but in my own experience, it worked for me.

I think drugs should be decriminalized. As long as drug use is seen as criminal and addicts are tossed into jails instead of receiving, we will see the same cycle.

What crimes ?
If someone commits a murder while on drugs it's doesn't make them any less responsible. Of course they should still be tried and punished for their crimes if found guilty. 
Should they be punished for being a drug addict? No. they should be offered treatment and a chance to rebuild their lives. But of course many addicts don't want to be helped so there's only so much you can do

At a cost of $64k a year per inmate to the taxpayer, id rather invest the money in public health services and drug education programs.

I don't know about your area but in my country there are more drugs in prison than there are on the streets, I think for most drugs are a lonely desperate disease punishment isn't the answer

Yes. I have seen too many life's destroyed, children and family alike, they're actions do not just effect them. Many drug users have children and absolutely ruin their life's. not to mention my brother has a drug problem and he steals from our family, and has broken in many people's homes to get money for drugs, and he attacked me at 9 months pregnant to steal my sell phone, was on top of me with his knee in my stomach, bc he was high and just didn't care.

It doesn't help the drug problem in this country. People need treatment options. Not to be thrown in jail where they'll get out and just do it again. The "war on drugs" has done absolutely nothing. They need help. And don't get me started on the thousands of prisoners in jail for weed charges and they get longer sentences than rapists. That's disgusting. Weed is no where near the same thing as crack and heroin.

I'm a little conflicted on this one. Heroin is running rampant, and that's scary. I think if someone overdoses on a drug, the dealer should be held at least some sort of accountable (think accessory to murder).  I think the addict should be held responsible for their actions, but also not in a traditional jail, but more of a rehabilitation jail. My sisters ex was a heroin junky, and stole stuff all the time to just get his fix. I think if there were a specialized jail system, maybe it would be better for addicts. I don't believe weed should be illegal, so that's that.
