Stingy with money

Is it worth it to date a man who is stingy with his money? I'm in a tough financial bind and my boyfriend offered to pay for my car insurance but he wants the money back? He told me straight up that he's not the type to just give someone a free ride but my family think that he's wrong. They also believe that this is a warning sign, that he will always be stingy with his money and that I should feel insulted by his request to be paid back. It honestly did throw me off but when he said I needed to pay him back but idk. My family say a man should take care of "his woman" so they don't think I should take the money from him.
