Breastfeeding help!

I recently gave birth and didn't get to work on breastfeeding that much while in the hospital because of some issues. Anyways I am home now and still trying to get baby to latch. breast milk has come in and I have seen a lactation consultant (but apparently I didn't get much assistance). My biggest issue I am having trouble with are my nipples staying firm while breastfeeding. I have tried pumping beforehand and then trying to get my baby to latch but they just don't stay firm/hard. Does anyone have any suggestions??? Please help as this is becoming a struggle and I'm not sure what to do.
