At what age did your child start sleeping in a separate room?
How old was your child when he/she started sleeping in a separate room?
We have a two-room apartment with a large living room / kitchen and a small bedroom. As we're expecting our little one soon we're thinking of options to either rent out the apartment and live in a bigger one (2 bedrooms, 1 livingroom) or live in this one and have our little one sleep with us in a tiny bedroom from age 1-6.
Note: my husband works at home and needs private space as well and he usually goes to bed at 4/5 in the morning which means we can't sleep in the living room and have the bedroom for our child alone.
I always thought that by the time my kid is 3/4 yo he should start sleeping in a separate room. Yet, parents around me keep telling me I won't want to let go of my boy at least till age 5/6 and have him sleep with us. They say that it's generally normal for kids to sleep with parents till that age. Regardless I think kids need to have their own private space and the earlier (3-4 yo max) the better they will learn to cope with separation and so on. Plus, there is a huge inconvenience in co-sleeping with a child for 6 years that involves bedtime differences, noise, the couple's sexual relationship, and more.
I want to learn more about how other families cope with this and what you consider normal as age for sleeping separately. Please share your opinion even it's shorter as "5yo is (not) normal for cosleeping".
