Stupid question, but do they monitor the umbilical cord location?

It's just a fear of mine. Are they routinely able to see the location of the cord and make sure it's not causing any distress?

Answer

Ultrasound tech here: things that are routinely checked in 2nd & 3rd trimester: fetal heart rate, umbilical cord doppler (listen to blood flow in umbilical cord). We also make sure there's no nuchal cord(cord wrapped around baby's neck). At your 20 week scan the Abdominal Cord Insertion is checked on baby to rule out abdominal wall malformations. The Placental Cord Insert is also documented to determine baby has a good blood supply. They watch abnormal cords(missing vessels- should be 3 vessel cord, untwisted cord- should have natural spiral appearance, etc) very closely. But mostly listening to the blood flow is the biggest determinant for normalcy.
